Succulent Success

June 29, 2009 by Rick

Variety is the spice of life they say and with our Classic Creation 9 packs you get a nice variety of succulents with which you can make some very interesting gardens. Succulents are the perfect plant for many folks. The are very forgiving of water and fertilizer deficiency. Succulents grow in sun, part shade and moderate shade and are often used as houseplants. Plant them in a well drained soil.

Maraca Portulaca molokensiensis Riverview Flower Farm

On a recent visit to the Farm, garden writer, Penny Carnathan from the Tampa Tribune, was very excited when she saw our trials with Maraca. Based on Penny's reaction we will be moving up the time table on production of Maraca. look for it to appear in Florida Home Depots by sometime in October. You can thank Penny for this.

Hi Rick,
Between you and Penny I might become a succulent fan yet.

There are some really intriguing varieties available these days. Florida Friendly is doing a smart thing and good service to offer the Classic Creations 9 packs.

I planted a Coral Reef Chines Sedum back in February and I must say I really like its carefree qualities.

Thanks for the great info. Meems

October? Yay!! I can't wait! I've actually been thinking a lot about how to best display Mr. Maraca -- it's such an unusual looking plant.
I was not a succulent fan in the past, but the heat tends to make you won. The Pazazz Purslane is doing very well (you were right, Rick, I think it was just a bit shell-shocked.)

I've looked for that Pazazz @ HD a few times and haven't found it yet. boo... I am opening up a sunny spot in the garden and was thinking I could use some as ground cover. I am going to try the Sedum hybrid 'Florida Friendly Gold'.  I bought it in the 12 pack a couple of months ago. After putting some of it in a few container plants the rest has been in a holding pot since then. Do you think it will spread on the ground fairly quickly in this heat?

The sedum will spread very quickly. I have seen no time when it declines. It spreads quicker with watering and light fertilization but you won't need much. It only flowers in April- May and then the spent flowers just disappear. I saw we put gallon Pazazz in the Northdale store today. We are temporarily short on the 12 packs. Which store do you prefer to shop?

Meems, you made me curious enough to look up Florida Friendly Gold in Rick's database. I can just see it lining one of your deep green beds ... fyi, I found the Pazazz at the Home Depot at I-275 and Dale Mabry 2 or 3 weeks ago. It was only sold in trays

Rick,
I shop at the Northdale store and was there on Monday but only saw (what I thought anyway) was regular purslane. I assumed it was regular because it was closed up. I'll check back if I decide to use it... I'm leaning toward the Gold... it seems to be industrial strength so far. Thanks for the help Rick and Penny.
