Succulents Success part 1

February 2, 2010 by Rick

Succulents are easy to grow in Florida and make especially beautiful arrangements for a sunny patio. Succulents require little water and can survive on rainfall alone. One important key is a well drained soil so the container does not become soggy when we do get a lot of rain. Use your standard potting soil and add 25% perlite to the mix so it drains quickly and you don’t ant to buy cactus and succulent soil which also is ideal.

Made a pass-through the Florida-friendly section at HD a couple of days ago and saw all these on display. I was buying 10 bags of top soil and 10 bags of sand (for starters) to mix and fill in some of the ruts in my yard. Where were my helpers then?

Anyway, I may become a fan of succulents yet with the trend toward their easy ways. They ARE beautiful in their own uniqueness.

Of course I'm already a BIG fan of the sedum gold... especially since it can go right in to the ground or a container without any special soil. AND it can be divided easily. I'll be buying more of it in a few weeks when my beds are ready.

Thanks for the good info.

I only became a fan of succulents in the past year, and after our freezes, I'm a HUGE fan! I had a bunch in the ground around my mailbox that I covered with a tablecloth through the freezes. (Thank goodness, not many formal dinners at the Carnathans.) All came through very well. I was amazed.
